Audience Tops Million Mark

BERKELEY, (Nov. 8) – The weekly metro audience of the
five station Pacifica Radio network topped one million listeners
a week for the first time in the organization’s 55-year
history, according to Arbitron estimates released by Pacifica
this week.
The total weekly audience listening to Pacifica in the network’s
five metro survey areas increased from 945,000 in spring 2004
to just over one million in summer 2004, according to Arbitron
estimates.
“This is an important milestone for Pacifica and shows
that we can grow audience while rededicating ourselves to
the network’s peace and social justice mission,”
said Dan Coughlin, Pacifica’s Executive Director.
The latest figures underscore the
long-term trend at Pacifica.
Between summer 2001 and summer 2004, Pacifica’s Monday-Sunday
audience in the five station metro survey areas grew from
766,000 to 1,006,000, according to Arbitron estimates. This
represents a 31 percent jump. (The network does not have Arbitrons
for the period fall 2001 to summer 2003.)
Pacifica station WBAI 99.5
FM in New York City led the network’s audience estimate
growth in the most recent Arbitron survey period, climbing
from an estimated weekly audience of 247,000 in spring 2004
to 347,000 in summer 2004.
Pacifica station WPFW 89.3
FM in Washington DC increased its weekly audience estimate
from 175,000 in spring 2004 to 186,000 in summer 2004, according
to Arbitron data.
Pacifica station KPFA 94.1FM
in Berkeley slipped back from a record high weekly audience
estimate of 202, 000 in spring 2004 to 169,000 in summer 2004.
KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston
dropped from 115,000 weekly metro audience estimate in spring
2004 to 100,000 in summer 2004. And weekly audience estimates
for KPFK 90.7FM in Los Angeles
decreased from 211,000 in spring 2003 to 204,000 in summer
2004.
